Long time muse of French new wave film director Jean-Luc Godard, Anna Karina was a major it-star of cinema during the 60s and 70s. Even despite that her on-screen outfits were chosen for her by wardrobe departments, her fashion and certain ‘je ne sais quoi’ style quality made her a sartorial idol.

Always Chic, Anna Karina

With classic fashions like tea length skirts, kitten heels, boxy bags and bouffant hair coming back into cycle this season, now seems like the perfect time to highlight the famed Ms. Karina–actress, model, singer, and author–as a StyledOn icon.

Karina is perhaps best known for her role as the charming and quirky Angela in the 1961 movie “A Woman is a Woman”. In the film, her style is feminine and beautiful, but undone and effortless all at the same time. Long tartan skirts, knit sweaters, and a memorable fur-trimmed jacket defined Karina’s aesthetic as Angela. Her makeup was simple yet perfect–a pale face with swish of black cat-like eyeliner, blue shadow, and a faint pink lip. It's no wonder she drove the men in the film nearly nutty.

To replicate her 60s style flair in a modern way, look to Louis Vuitton, Prada, or ADAM. Long and full circle skirts, corset tops, tailored jackets, and curve-enhancing belted dresses are all obvious choices. But what would Anna-as-Angela wear today in 2010? Perhaps something a bit more opulent and dramatic- we like to image her in looks from Jason Wu, Yves Saint Laurent, and Fendi. What do you think?

Get the look with ADAM's tomato red cable-knit sweater ($295) and pair with either NW3 by Hobbs red arches wool checked patch pocket skirt ($167 at ASOS) or Grey Antics' long cotton skirt ($198 at Urban Outfitters).

Who are some of your sartorial heroes?
