A great alternative to the glitzy shopping the Hamptons have become known for, we provide a guide to a handful of plum vintage shops located along Route 27.
Not typically thought of as a vintage shopping destination, the East End of Long Island has kept its vintage gems under the radar, allowing fashion industry insiders first dibs on the well-curated pieces, many from the closets of the grand dames of the Hamptons set. Here, we give you a roundup of the selection:
1. Out of The Closet
Perhaps the most well known vintage store in the Hamptons, Out of The Closet has one of the largest vintage inventories we have ever seen. Jam-packed into a duplex along Bridge Hampton’s Main Street are the wares collected by owners Lucy Martin and Ruth Chernaik. Don’t let the extensive archives intimidate you, though, as this shop is home to some truly great finds, spanning from Victorian Era lace to 1980s spangle. Whether it is a luxe fur from the 1970s, a feminine 1940s housedress, or a voluminous party dress from the 50s, Out of The closet is sure to have racks worth of options for you to choose from. Some standout pieces from our most recent shopping trip here include a 1970s Lanvin shirtdress, signature Mary McFadden gowns in all colors of the rainbow, an Hermes riding helmet, and a totally lust inducing Halston black chiffon gown that any one of Rachel Zoe’s starlets would be lucky to wear to the Oscars. An on-site tailor provides exceptional nipping and tucking to get your purchases to fit you just right.

2. Antiques
The straightforward name of the store hints at the old school approach taken at this antique co-operative which is home to the best vintage jewelry collection we have ever laid eyes on. The space is divided among four antique firms, but it’s our girl Barbara Trujillo who is responsible for the gems that take over a good half of the store. Displayed in antique glass cases are loads of chunky turquoise pieces, beautiful beaded rosaries, tons of Bakelite and a vast selection of Lucite items. Standout pieces include a heavily beaded brooch from Miriam Haskell, a Patricia Von Musulin ivory bangle, a blinging Eisenberg Ice pin and a to-die-for crystal encrusted oversized Armani scorpion brooch. The store has just added a rack of clothing to its wares, and one would be remiss to leave without purchasing one of the framed vintage swimsuits for their beach house.

3. Nikki Eve
The newest entrant to the Hamptons vintage scene is this lovely boutique, opened in the summer of 2009 by Nikki Eve Aarons. Nikki, a young but lifelong vintage and fashion enthusiast, curates her collection with a fine tuned eye. The space is home to pristine pieces including everything from 1920s floral dresses to collectible rocker tees. For summer, Nikki brings in a great collection of lightweight, perfectly worn in ethnic pieces suited for the heat, but her penchant for glam 1970s British designers is always evident. She manages to hold down an impressive array of garments from her personal favorites including Ossie Clark, Zandra Rhodes and Biba. No matter what your taste, Nikki Eve is the place to go if your looking to stock up on easy summer pieces at good prices, or for the perfect unique, drop-dead dress for a special occasion.

4. Colette Designer Consignment
Although Colette does not specialize in vintage, some truly great older finds mingle among the rest of the racks of newer consignment pieces. In particular, this is the place to score a vintage designer handbag in perfect condition. Owner Tisha Colette has pretty much cornered the market on vintage Chanel handbags on the East End. She has a constant rotation of Chanel evening bags, briefcases, and the classic double flaps (no longer in production) on prominent display in all three of her boutiques. Your best bet, though, would probably be the Sag Harbor location. We must warn you—if you see one you like, do not hesitate! These Chanel babies fly off her shelves at an incredible rate. Although prices may run a bit high, payment plans are available, and the unique items are well worth shelling out for. Also noteworthy is the vintage Judith Leiber collection Tisha has started, along with some great vintage jewels. The consignment collection is also pretty much off the charts and includes everything from barely worn Philip Lim to barely there Versace.

5. Tommy Hilfiger
At his East Hampton Main Street outpost, a few all-American vintage items can be spotted among the rest of the Tommy gear. Distinguishable from the rest of the clothing by their dramatic Lucite hangers, look out for some classic nautical pieces that Jackie O would have worn for a day of sailing on the Long Island Sound. Anchor prints, rope details and seersucker dominate the limited vintage pieces available, all of which are in perfect condition despite the many clambakes and misty sea breezes they have undoubtedly encountered over the years.
