I almost skipped out on the Alexander Wang Sample Sale today because I don't really need anything – but thank god I didn't because I scored big. I didn't buy a bag or a pair of shoes (although they are for sale and you can snag a sweet hobo for no more than $250), but did make out with a few sample pieces and a dress that will probably get my boyfriend to propose (kidding).
So what will you find? Basically everything from the Spring/Summer collection. Loved those red and cream slashed cropped sweaters or Leandra's olive peek-a-boo top? They have a ton of them in every size and are available for $160 and $100 respectively. Actually, you can find everything you see in the runway images included in this post at the sale, except for the footwear (although there are a couple of styles for sale from the Fall 2009 season as well as the Jact Studded Sandals). Lots of sweaters, pants, shorts, jackets and dresses fill the space and are arranged by style. Everything from the RTW line is priced $60-$240.
Some of the leather jackets and coats topped off at $500, but most of the outerwear was priced around $250 (including the trench seen in the top image with the stripped fabric insert, which I love).
Walking in well before the official 2pm sale start, I was fortunate enough to avoid a line, but (around 1pm) it crawled up Mercer and around the block onto Spring Street (see below). If you're planning on shopping the sale (which you really should because it's worth it), go early in the morning or in the late afternoon (remember that lunch time and right after work will most likely be the busiest times and therefore the longest lines).
Shopping the sample racks: There are a few racks towards the back of the store labeled either $25, $50, or $75 and these are the sample racks. If you see something you might like on one of these racks, we highly suggest that you bother to try it on. I tried on a bunch of pants and while a few were ripped at various seams, there are some good ones out there. I took home a velvet skirt with mesh insert for $25 (see below), and the fitted lace top above for $50 after trying on about 12 various samples. While most of the samples run rather small, there are a good amount of larger sizes mixed in as well so definitely check it out.
I tried on many of Wang's body-con dresses (which you'll find on the racks right in front as you enter the space) and fell in love with them all! While I really loved the gray one shown on the runway in the very top image here, I bought the white dress seen above because it can be easily layered under jackets in the colder months. Originally $560, it is now $160.
T for Alexander Wang bins are off to the left, in the middle, and separate merchandise by price ($20 to $50). Soft tanks, tees, simple dresses and sports bras are all available in sizes XS-L. You'll also find a handful of gym shorts and relaxed cardigans. I bought a one-strap white sports bra for $20 that I'll probably use as a layering piece this fall.
