October Must-Buy: Black Ankle Boots

Whether you're heading out for a casual weekend brunch, or dressing up for date night, a pair of simple black ankle boots are an investment to last you for many seasons to come.

Spotted on some of our favorite Hollywood starlets, international bloggers, and it-girls, the simple black ankle boot is our pick for October’s must-but item. Not only are they available in a wide range of prices, styles, and heel-heights, they are also the perfect in-between when it comes to dressing up or dressing down. Alexa Chung wears the on the red carpet or out in the streets with equal panache, and Kate Bosworth is rarely spotted out of her black suede pair.

Why the current obsession? As opposed to ballet flats or brogues, the ankle boot is neither too feminine nor too tough, and with most of our favorite styles clocking in at about 2-3 inches of heel height, they’re a great investment for daily wear, whether paired with a midi skirt and nubby sweater, or black skinny jeans and a leather jacket.

Which to buy? We like styles that have a stacked heel (no stilettos!), and a rounded toe. When you shop for your own, make sure that the sides of the boot don't go higher than your ankle bone. If the boot is too high, they can make your legs look short – and that's not what we're going for! There are plenty of styles with interesting details like ankle banding, or a pair with a gold heel (above right). If simplicity's your thing, there are even more plain black suede styles to choose from!
