Meet Sara Zucker, one of the fashion editors for Tumblr. We recently sat down with the Farpitzs blogger to talk shopping, social media, fashion, and of course, Tumblr.
If you don't do Tumblr, you might want to consider starting now. We launched our tumblr blog a short while ago and have been falling in love with the platform ever since. So simple to use, Tumblr is an image-heavy network where sharing and liking is strongly encouraged – just as it is here at StyledOn.
We first met Sara Zucker a couple of months ago while filming the video for Katherine Kwei's Lulu bag (see it here) and have been following her blog, Farpitzs, since then. Part of the Tumblr 24 who stormed New York Fashion Week, Sara is also one of the most active fashion editors on the site. You also saw her picks for the recent Met Gala in our feature a couple of weeks ago. But you know us – we're nosey and wanted to know more about where she came from, where she's going, and all about her love for Tumblr...
StyledOn: Please tell us a bit about your background and how you started blogging.
Sara Zucker: I was still living with my parents at age 24, getting my Masters in Library Science and Archival Studies and was all sorts of bored. A friend suggested I start a blog, so I did. It isn't a terribly interesting back-story, unfortunately.
SO: What's the concept behind your blog?
SZ: I started my blog as a way to hint to my parents about things I wanted them to buy me on my birthday, for Chanukah, just for being born, in addition to rambling about how boring my life was (living at home, in grad school) - I quickly realized that I had a one-track mind and decided to fully concentrate on the fashion industry. The more I wrote for other people about it, the more I realized that I wanted people to know what I knew.
SO: Have you always used Tumblr as your blogging platform or did you switch over from another?
SZ: I used a Xanga in college and wrote short stories about my ridiculous experiences working in a local pharmacy. It was basically a way for friends back at UConn to keep up with my tomfoolery, or, rather, everyone else's around me, but it only lasted a year. I joined Tumblr in 2008 and have been a crazy loyal user ever since. I'll never use anything else. Quote me on that.
A chic icebox of Chanel... as seen on Sara's tumblr page.
SO: What about Tumblr drew you to it?
SZ: Its ease. At first, I can be an incredibly lazy person, but once I get into something (anything), I put my all into it. Tumblr is scary easy to use, it gives you instant feedback and allows you to engage and grow an audience quickly. When I joined, it was still shiny and new, the NYC media scene still seemed fairly small and Tumblr coordinated small get-togethers. I've made an incredible amount of close friends from the site and I wouldn't have a social life without it.
SO: What, to you, are the top three reasons for joining Tumblr?
SZ: Read answer above. Also: an endless stream of inspiration in every realm, instant interaction with readers all over the world, its ever-growing collection of blogs solely dedicated to pictures of bunnies.
SO: Do you use other social media/networking sites? Which do you like best and why?
SZ: Facebook, Twitter, Bnter. I don't have a preference as I use each in a very specific way. Facebook is for keeping in touch with longtime friends/family/acquaintances, I save Twitter for mostly non-fashion-related thoughts, Bnter documents hilarious conversations for posterity.
SO: Talk to us about being a Tumblr fashion editor...
SZ: I have a little star button in the middle of my "reblog" and "like" buttons and I press it when a fashion-related post tickles my fancy; it then gets pushed to the Fashion Explore page. Being an editor allows me to support users that create interesting, unique, original content. Those users deserve their time to shine probably more than I need to be an editor.
A little Bottega, also seen on Sara's tumblr page.
SO: On your Tumblr, it seems that you're asked for shopping advice a lot. How did this start and how often do you receive these requests?
SZ: I started "styling" friends of mine in NYC who came to me with fashion issues, which ranged from searching for well-priced vintage in the area to finding the perfect pair of trousers. Once I opened up the opportunity for everyone else to come to me with questions, it flourished. I definitely don't answer every question, though – I avoid the overly-specific ones and try to focus on inquiries that will help other people.
SO: What are some of your favorite trends for the summer?
SZ: I don't usually subscribe to of-the-moment trends, I prefer long-standing ones – clashing prints, military-inspired outerwear, I love a grunge-y look.
SO: Favorite stores?
SZ: INA, Barneys Co-Op, Free People, Beacon's Closet, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Thrift Shop.
SO: Favorite sites and blogs?
SZ: Too many to name, but Feels Like White Lightning, Nicolette Mason, Textbook, Beckerman Bite Plate and From Me To You are stand-outs.
