A Mademoiselle Chair for Les Hommes?

April 19, 2012

What do you get when you combine Philippe Starck, Lenny Kravitz, and Kartell? Leather, fur, and untamed testosterone-fueled design.
A Mademoiselle Chair for Les Hommes?

We've professed our love for the Mademoiselle chair before, one of our favorite Objects of Desire - but the latest iteration hitting the floor now during Milan Design Week seems, well, more masculine.

The project reportedly grew out of a friendship between Philippe Starck and the American rock icon's studio Kravitz Design resulting in an exclusive collection of six reinterpreted Mademoiselle chairs, which were originally designed by Starck for the Italian furniture company. Kravitz has re-imaged the chairs using exotic fur, leather, python and woven leather - reflecting his own character and projected lifestyle. "Philippe Starck has been wonderfully supportive my design endeavours, so when he asked me if I would interpret his Mademoiselle chair for Kartell, I was excited about the idea of two icons collaborating in this way. The Kravitz Design take on the Mademoiselle chair is haute couture meets rock and roll," says Kravitz.

"An environment is made of materiality; wood, stone, metal… but also made of immateriality such as light, temperature, memories and also sounds and music," explains Starck. "Lenny proved at the highest level he could create an entire musical universe. it is now time for him to translate the magic of his music into materiality, into chairs, into lamps… a new experience for Lenny, a new territory for us."

Salone del Mobile, the international design and furniture show happening now through April 22, showcases the best in design including Bottega Veneta's latest line with Poltrona Frau, Diesel's new kitchen by Scavolini, and debut home lines from Antonio Marras and Roberto Cavalli (Can you say zebra?). And while we'll be seeing most of it up close during the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in May, we couldn't help be mention the Kravitz/Starck/Kartell collection now. Setting the rather sweet bromance between Kravitz and Starck aside, what do you think of this latest Mademoiselle Chair? On first glance, it seemed a little out of control to us and rather uninspired, but now several of the designs are growing on us. Scroll through the images below and let us know what you think!
