You’ve seen his pieces on Kelis, Kylie Minogue, and soon you’ll see them on the big screen in Sex and the City 2. Meet Rodrigo Otazu, our new favorite jewelry designer.

Sex and the City and Rodrigo Otazu

We might as well admit that we’re beyond excited for the new Sex and the City movie. We’ve all lived, cried and died for the fashion on the show and when we discovered Rodrigo Otazu created a bunch of pieces for the next movie – well, we simply had to take a closer look and meet the man behind the bling.

Rodrigo Otazu is, to put it simply, a very lovely man. What makes him so? He designs stunning jewelry that we can actually afford. He has a library as rich as his closet. He’s constantly pushing himself to design something new to the market that elicits a ‘Wow’ from the ladies. He has also lived everywhere and thinks New York girls are the most stylish in the world – which makes him the perfect man to be outfitting the ladies of SATC.

StyledOn: So how did your collection end up in the hands of Sex and the City stylist, Patricia Field?
Rodrigo Otazu: During Fashion’s Night Out back in September, I was outside of Henri Bendel looking at my jewelry in the window when I suddenly got an email about my pieces being featured in Italian Vogue. I immediately showed it to my friend, who immediately sent it to Pat Field. She said she wanted it for the movie and the very next day I was in the wardrobe department with the crew. It happened very fast!

SO: That’s amazing! The wardrobe department is bananas! So can you tell us a bit about your inspiration for the line?
RO: Of course. Coco Chanel, the woman, provides the fire or sparkle behind my designs. I’ve also been inspired by Indian and Arabic cultures, and also by the women that I’m surrounded by. I strive to push my designs into a new realm creating that wow-factor with every piece. Right now, I love my pieces with pearls and chains.

SO: So let’s talk New York…
RO: New York City has completely changed me! New York girls are really, really special – truly magical. They aren’t afraid of being individuals. In Paris, the girls are so put together with the hair and the make-up and everything. It’s almost too much. In Manhattan, the girls are just cool. They wear jeans and a tank top with the most amazing accessories. It’s modern and looks very effortless. They look so naturally chic and comfortable.

SO: Other than girls in the city, who are your favorite ladies?
RO: I’m currently dressing Kylie Minogue (who is unbelievable); I’m working on a crazy metal body piece for Lady Gaga; Kelis has been a friend for 10 years. The first time I met Kelis, we were both wearing green pants and we’ve been friends ever since. I styled and shot (I’m also a photographer) the cover for Acapella. I’ve also worked with Britney for her MTV VMA "Slave for You" performance.

SO: That’s awesome. Tell us more about Kelis…
RO: We worked together on creating a new image for her that was very futuristic – one part Jetson’s one part J.Lo from The Cell.

SO: I loved The Cell!! So what’s next for you?
RO: I’m heading to India soon. Always looking to create the impossible and India is a wealth of inspiration!

SO: Ok, let’s go into a few of your favorite spots in New York…
RO: I love the Boom Boom room and even though Buddakan isn’t anything new, it is still one of my favorites. I also have a crush on Anderson Cooper and saw him at one of Graydon Carter’s restaurants recently (so now it’s a favorite of mine too). And the Met! The Met is so magical and the American Woman exhibition is amazing. The library at the Met is one of my favorite places to hang out – I have a very large library of my own in my house in Amsterdam and always feel at home in-between stacks of books.

SO: Anything else we should know about you?
RO: I’m making my own clothing now because it’s cheaper than shopping at Dolce and I can make exactly what I want!

Well, Rodrigo. As much as you love the girls of New York, we love you. And all of your designs. Seriously. In the words of Carrie Bradshaw, “Hello, Lover!”

Rodrigo Otazu jewelry is available online and at many stores including Henri Bendel.

Are you loving Rodrigo Otazu? Will you be wearing some big bling to see SATC 2?
