Opening this week at the Petit Palais in Paris is a retrospective exhibition showcasing over 300 outfits by iconic designer, Yves Saint Laurent.

All About Yves

Following the announcement last week that Yves Saint Laurent's longtime partner and business manager Pierre Bergé will release a book of letters to the late designer titled Letters to Yves, is the opening of "Yves Saint Laurent" at the Petit Palais, the largest retrospective exhibit of his work to date.

Joelle Diderich for WWD reports "the display kicks off with a small room re-creating the designer’s office, with a mood board and a trestle table on which his trademark glasses lie among sketches, as if waiting for Saint Laurent to return momentarily." There is also a room dedicated to YSL's friend and muse, Catherine Deneuve, and one dedicated to the infamous 1971 collection inspired by the forties that was panned by critics. ysl

But this exhibition is only the beginning of what could very well become the year of YSL: Later in 2010, you can look forward to a boom in YSL literature, film and memorabilia (including a coloring book). While we find it slightly sad that the fashion industry is cashing on in his legacy, we take heart in the fact that perhaps a new generation of fashion curious men and women will become devotees of Le Smoking and all things YSL.

Note: If you're interested in learning more about the rise of the iconic Yves, I recommend The Beautiful Fall: Fashion, Genius, and Glorious Excess in 1970s Paris, by Alicia Drake. I've only just started and already can't put it down!
