Ever since hitting the scene back in 2008, Proenza Schouler's PS1 bag has been a smash success. We dissect this It bag and find out whether or not it's worthy of its supreme status (and price tag).
We've lusted after Proenza Schouler's PS1 bags for a long time now – and so have many of you, no doubt. Originally seen on the arms of fashion icons and editors including Lauren Santo Domingo (and every other girl at Vogue) and the Olsen twins, this bag has blown up and is offered as a medium, large and extra large satchel, a clutch, and now a mini messenger.
StyledOn's Lainey has a black-on-black medium PS1 satchel and we asked her to explain a bit about why she loves it so much. "For my birthday, I decided to treat myself to a functional yet classically designed bag that I could (and would want to) use for a long time. I believe a good bag is worth the investment! I love all of the different compartments it features and have assigned them all so that I always know exactly where everything (cell, keys, lip gloss, compact, pen, keys) is," she says.
For those who don't know, Proenza Schouler began in 1998 as Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCoullough's senior project at Parsons School of Design. However, by the time they rolled out their first collection, it was snatched up by Barneys New York immediately. In 2004, Proenza Schouler launched its first shoe collection with great reception, but it is their first handbag line, the PS1 (inspired by a classic satchel) that has really broadened their audience and cemented them as serious accessory designers.
'It' Item: Proenza Schouler PS1 Satchel
Price:
PS1 Pouchette - $895 in leather, $1,735 in python
PS1 Mini Messenger - $1,595 (the newest member to the PS1 family & a bit different from the others)
PS1 Medium satchel - $1,595 in leather or suede, $3,645 in python
PS1 Large satchel - $1,995 in leather or suede, $4,250 in python, $14,500 in croc
PS1 Extra large size - $2,350 in leather or suede, $5,250 in python
Where to Buy: Barneys or directly from Proenza Schouler for awesome selection.
The Dissection: As previously mentioned, the PS1 now comes in five different sizes and variations, although the medium-sized satchel remains the most popular. Created with five different pockets, this modern interpretation of a classic satchel features lush leathers, chic shapes, and amazing hardware. Made in Italy, the construction is flawless and well thought out. All zippers have the Proenza Schouler signature, which is also seen on the custom, durable lining inside of each pocket. If a pocket can't be zipped shut, it can still be semi-secured via magnetic snaps. The hardware for the main flap is really heavy-duty and secures the bag very well, although you can also insert the side straps into the belt loops. The PS1 satchels come with a top handle as well as an over-the-shoulder strap held on with swivling hardware so that the straps won't get all twisted around your body. The leather and suede is amazing, the python is better, and the croc is almost too luxe.
The Downfall: The price. Seriously, these babies aren't cheap.
Verdict: We die for this bag, no matter how much it costs.

P.S. The duo introduced the PS11 at their last show and we're all about it as well - in fact, I think I may even like it better than the ones above...
