Blog Love: Opinion Nothing

June 20, 2012

She never wears the same makeup two days in a row - and she can prove it! Time to meet beauty junkie and all around wonder woman, Opinion Nothing, and discover 5 beauty items every girl should invest in.
Blog Love: Opinion Nothing

We first became acquainted with Opinion Nothing and the girl behind, JM, via Instagram and quickly became friends once we discovered just how obsessed she really is with beauty products (she'll literally buy full drugstore collections on impulse and delights in trying new colors and looks). Not the typical personal style blogger we feature in the Blog Love series, JM works as an accountant by day, hosts amazing dinner parties in her back yard all summer long, has a delightful twitter feed...and that's just the tip of the iceberg! Read our full interview below and let us know what your favorite beauty products are in the comment section.

StyledOn: Tell us a little about yourself - how did you get into Tumblr and beauty blogging in general?
Opinion Nothing: I work in finance which offers little room for creativity. My office wardrobe is somewhat bland (black, black, and more black) and I found myself frequently turning to beauty blogs on Tumblr and makeup tutorials on YouTube for inspirational ways to add interest to my day-to-day look. I began experimenting with makeup nearly every day and ultimately decided to share my own beauty adventure. I'm a regular girl, a consumer under the magic spell of the beauty industry. I have a lot to share, but I hope my opinions never influence anyone to the point that they stop experimenting on their own. That's where the name of my blog comes from; it's mildly self-deprecating, but ultimately my opinion - about makeup, about beauty - means nothing. It's all about personal preference. Tumblr felt like the right platform for me because its beauty community has such a strong presence. IT's a place for makeup lovers from all over the world to share their passion for beauty all day, every day.

SO: When did you first fall in love with beauty?
ON: Growing up, my mother never wore makeup. Many of her friends did though, and I poked around in their makeup bags when they came to visit. I remember frequently walking to the drugstore with my allowance, spending hours in the beauty aisles inspecting different products and looking for something familiar.

SO: You say that you never wear the same makeup two days in a row - and that you can prove it, which makes things fun! How do you keep things fresh day to day? Any beauty secrets you'd like to share?
ON: I enjoy using different products every day and it encourages me to never let anything go to waste. Before I started blogging, I had a drawer full of makeup I loved but never wore because it was easy to get stuck in a beauty routine. Now my makeup collection is bigger than ever before and I can honestly say I use everything I have. To keep things fresh, I play with color. Whether it's a coral blush one day and a pink the next, or swapping traditional black eyeliner with something bold like purple or green, I think changing my overall look is just as important as using different products.

I think my biggest beauty secret is incorporating 100% pure Argan Oil into my daily routine. I apply it to my face, neck, and nail beds after showering at night. Argan Oil even helps my eyelashes which are often so brittle from wearing mascara every day. I use it on my hair...dry elbows...basically anywhere that needs a moisture boost.

SO: What are the top 5 beauty items every girl should invest in?
ON: 1) Tinted moisturizer with SPF - I love tinted moisturizers because they can multitask where it counts most - protecting skin from the sun's harsh rays and reducing the appearance of imperfections, all while adding some much-needed hydration. There's a perfect tinted moisturizer for any skin type! I'm currently in love with NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 30.

2) Eye Cream - Our eyes are one of the first places on our faces to show signs of aging; don't wait until it's too late to care for such a delicate area. I'm not particularly concerned about wrinkles and crow's feet just yet, but I still moisturize with a product that de-puffs and minimizes the appearance of under-eye circles. I've been using Clinique All About Eyes Rich for a few years.

3) Eyeshadow Primer - A great primer can turn an inexpensive eyeshadow into something extraordinary. It acts as a base to prevent creasing and gives eye makeup something to adhere to. My two favorites are Mark Please Hold Eyeshadow Primer and NARS Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base.

4) Skincare Masks - For every skin concern, there are a dozen masks to treat it. Find one (or two, or three!) that can meet your needs and incorporate it into your skincare routine. It's a great way to nourish your skin while simultaneously making personal time for yourself. I like to rotate a few soothing, hydrating masks from Mario Badescu while I relax on the couch with my Kindle.

5) Red Carpet Lipstick - Chanel, Tom Ford, Guerlain, NARS, Le Metier de Beaute, YSL...anything that makes you feel like a movie star when you put it on. Luxurious packaging never hurts either!

SO: What is the most treasured item in your beauty closet?
ON: Right now, probably my MAC Scarlet Ibis lipstick from the Iris Apfel collection. Not only is it a perfect shade of orange-y pink that makes me feel glamorous (see #5 above), I admire Iris Apfel's sensibility and I feel empowered by her whenever I wear it.

SO: Favorite places to shop?
ON: Beauty: Any drugstore, Blue Mercury, Bergdorf Goodman. Fashion: Office seperates from J. Crew and Ann Taylor, weekend casual from Club Monaco, shoes from Cole Haan, and Net-a-Porter for big splurges.

SO: What do you find to be most inspirational?
ON: I'm most inspired by simplicity and organization. Things Organized Neatly is one of my favorite non-beauty blogs and I think my Today's Face photos are often inspired by images on that site. When I see my tools laid out in front of me, it's much easier to focus on creating a look without any distractoin.

SO: Speaking of blog love...which blogs do you read the most?
ON: My Google Reader is overflowing with blogs, but I'm always on the hung for more. When I don't have time to read everything (sometimes I have over 1,000 items a day!), I go right for my favorites: Temptalia for swatches and reviews of every makeup item under the sun, The Cut (NY Mag's fashion blog), AM. (a makeup blog by one of my favorite makeup artists, Annamarie Tendler), and Farpitzs (an ultra-relatable personal style blog).

SO: And finally, tell us something that other people might not now...maybe that you live with an oversized Yorkie?
ON: HA! I do live with an oversized Yorkie. His name is Toby and he likes to sit directly on top of my feet when I apply my makeup. He's an interesting character. I spend most of my free time with him, eating brunch, and scouring local flea markets for hard-to-find Pyrex dishes.

And now it's YOUR turn! What are your favorite beauty products?
