Courtney Palmer owns a business with her husband, works as a hair stylist, and is going back to school in a few days – not to mention the beautiful blog she keeps, A Fancy Day. We love her sweet sense of style and would love to sit down with her and share a cup of tea, but since she's in Idaho and we're in New York, we decided to feature her in our weekly Blog Love series as the next best thing! Read on to learn more about Courtney...
StyledOn: Tell us a little about yourself – how did you get into blogging?
Courtney Palmer: I was born and raised in Austin, Texas and moved to Idaho for school to study photography. While here I met my Husband of nearly 4 years. I ended up not liking photography, and applied at Paul Mitchell for cosmetology school and absolutely fell in love with hair, and am currently working at a local salon. I recently decided to go back to school to finish my degree and will be starting up again this spring. As for blogging I originally started a blog as a way of keeping in touch with my family. I soon discovered a world of fashion bloggers and was so inspired I decided to give it a try. However, I wanted my blog to be different. Being a student I don’t have a lot of money, and I wanted my outfits to be something anyone could afford. I wanted the women who looked at my blog to be able to re-create my outfits if they so chose.
SO: How did you get started with your own stationery/letterpress store?
CP: Funny story. My husband is actually a really talented Graphic Designer (though he would never say that) and one summer a handful of friends asked him to design their wedding invites. He offered to do it for free, but after getting more and more referrals from designing our friends invites we thought hey I bet we could make some money off of this. And Me & You Invites was born. It’s more of just a side project for us since my husband works full time as a graphic designer and I’m in the salon. I do more of the business/correspondence, which is the side I love.
SO: If you could collaborate with anyone on a project, who and what would it be?
CP: The first blog I ever got into was Color Me Katie. Being a photography student at the time I was so inspired and still am by her beautiful view of the world, and how she shares her world with us through her photographs. I would love to do a fashion series with her, see what kind of crazy places she would have us take pictures.
SO: What do you do when you’re not blogging?
CP: I’m usually in the salon, hanging out with my husband, going on bike rides, shopping, baking cookies, reading other blogs, or playing with my cat Coco. I love having friends over for dinner, and meeting new people.
SO: What is the most treasured item in your closet?
CP: I have this beautiful green skirt that I got from J. Crew on an extreme discount. It is the ideal classic Jackie O tweed pencil skirt. I feel so classy when I wear it.
SO: What inspires you?
CP: Honestly other bloggers, the reason I love the blogging world so much is because we are just regular everyday women, and we can all relate to one another. There is something so inspiring to me about how independently awesome all these women are. I also really love beautiful color schemes, a well decorated room, or a vase of flowers. Any of these can give me an idea for a new outfit.
SO: Is there something you think every woman should have in her wardrobe?
CP: I think every woman should have a perfect go to dress that fits her like a dream. I would also say a great pair of jeans, and that perfect shade of lipstick. My favorite shade is Lady Danger by Mac.
SO: We love your blog and read it on a regular basis. Which blogs do you read the most?
CP: My favorite blogs for fashion are Kendi Everyday, Atlantic-Pacific, Sterling Style, and I really love B.Jones Style. I wish I could pull off even just one of her outfits. For lifestyle blogs Busy Bee Lauren, Nat The Fat Rat is a dream to read, and the Rockstar Diaries.
SO: Tell us something about yourself that we might not expect.
CP: I have a huge soft spot for cats. A life long goal of mine is to build a shelter where cats can come and get the care they need. Totally random, but I feel like a lot of cats are abused and I would love to make a difference.
