Frizzy hair is usually a girl's worst nightmare, but thanks to the trend of bone-dry hair this season, we can all start embracing the crazy.

Beauty Report: Frizz Factor

Spring might be known for rain showers but in terms of beauty, this season is going to be a dry one. Messy, matte hairstyles stomped down a whole slew of spring 2011 runways including Proenza Schouler (above), Carlos Miele and Rodarte. The looks were big, dry, tousled and chaotic. We saw bouffants, long waves and low ponytails all celebrating frizzy flyaway. Lucky for us, this look could not be easier to achieve. No blow driers. No flat irons. No electric tools needed. This is a super low maintenance style that is sure to become a summer favorite.

One thing this look needs is volume. By washing with a volumizing shampoo and conditioner, hair can be prepped for success. Aveda’s Pure Abundance Volumizing shampoo ($15) is not only favored by many but it’s also backed by Allure magazine’s Editor’s Choice Award. Since the more unkempt the better with this style, skip smoothing things out with a blow dryer. Instead, scrunch your hair with a styling mouse and let it air dry. We love Aussie’s Sprunch Mousse + Leave-In Conditioner ($3.29) that keeps your wave shaped all day. Once dry, mess things up by teasing random sections around your head.

If you want this look but you’re on an off washday or don’t have time for a rinse, use a dry shampoo all over. Dry shampoos are powder sprays that give a matte look while also adding volume the way a hairspray does. Unlike some products on the market, Klorane’s aerosol ($7.50) won’t leave your mane looking chalky white. Not to mention… it smells great.

One of the best ways to get this look is by spritzing hair with sea salt. We recommend Bumble & Bumble’s Surf Spray ($23), which can be applied to either wet or dry hair and results in a beachy windswept style. Even better, this product has hold without the sticky or crunchiness of a traditional hairspray. If your hair is naturally stick straight, spray this into your hair while it’s wet and wrap everything up into either one or two buns atop your head. Let your locks down after they’re dry for the perfect messy wave. If you're after Rodarte's Spring runway look, pull a large section from your sidepart and pin it close to your hairline with a large, tortoise shell barrette, like these (above) from France Luxe Elysee ($30).

The key to pulling off a disheveled mane is to balance out your look with a well put-together outfit and polished makeup. This way, people will get the message that your hairstyle is intentional rather than accidental. After all, there is a fine line between being fashionably disheveled and just a plain hot mess.

Are you feeling the dry hair trend or are you keeping with a sleek and shiny mane instead?
