Think stripes are too bold for your home? Think again. Here are our favorite stripe-y pieces to add punch to your pad without causing chaos.
The trick to decorating, whether you're using patterns or simple solids, is balance. No one wants their home to look boring or blah, but no one wants to live in Willy Wonka's pied-à-terre either. Bold pieces like the Louis XV upholstered ribbon chair (above right) add a summery vibe all year round, and even the most minimalist of spaces can get a boost from adding a striped piece here and there (like the Jonathan Adler dog bowl, above right). Here are our picks for some super stripes this season:
Slipping some stripes into your kitchen decor is a quick and subtle way to amp up the energy without investing a fortune. Color Ring Dinner Plate, $9.95; Aster stripe dishtowel, $2.95; French fry/burger basket liners, $2.95 for 24.
Adding colorful accent pieces to an otherwise solid space makes a room feel fresh and inviting. Pendleton Glacier National Park Blanket, $160; Encyclopedia 2 by Valerie Roybal, starting at $20; Striped lamp shade, at Target stores.
Striped wall hooks ($18) won't overpower your space, but neither will thin, subtle stripes on a larger piece like this sofa ($2,498).
If you're feeling the stripe-love and you've got money to burn, this baby from B&B Italia will cradle you to sleep in true style (don't forget to put your feet up!).
How will you play with stripes this season?
