Don’t be fooled by its humble exterior – inside Pies ‘n Thighs is a fried chicken fantasia, replete with pies to die for.
Last Sunday, while lazily perusing the pages of Bon Appetit’s June issue, I came across a listing of the top 10 spots for fried chicken, and nearly burst with excitement to find that one of these said spots was not only in Brooklyn, but within walking distance of my house. I immediately made a date with the bf for that very evening, and spent the rest of the day anxiously awaiting our outing to Pies 'n Thighs. The restaurant, owned by three friends who met as cooks, recently reopened in a larger space and added some new items to the menu. Their calling cards, however, are of course the fried chicken, the pies, and the donuts, which made New York Magazine’s list of Best Donuts in NYC in 2007.
While I’m not a connoisseur of fried chicken by any means, this stuff was really, really good. Crispy, crunchy, not too greasy on the outside, and moist, tender chicken on the inside. The big sellers on the menu are the fried chicken box, the pulled pork sandwich, and the fried catfish box, but it’s the sides that leave you with some pretty tough choices. Grits, collard greens, hushpuppies, mac ‘n cheese, baked beans, creamed spinach, potato salad… it’s a veritable who’s who of southern cooking all-stars; my only lament was that I couldn’t try them all (though I can definitely recommend the baked beans!). For dessert we had the chocolate peanut butter pie (um… hello God, it’s me Emily), and the rhubarb pie, which had perfectly flaky crust and a tart-but-sweet filling.
The bottom line: I’m seriously considering moving if it means I’ll be in their delivery area.

not a fan of fried chicken on the bone (i know, i know) but everything else looks amazing!!
