If it's comfort food you want, that's exactly what you'll get at Gnocco in the East Village.

Good Eats: Gnocco

When I have a craving for really divine comfort food (which happened about 3,278,293 times this blizzard-ridden winter) I always dash over to Gnocco in the East Village. There's something enchanting and charming in the air as you first make your way through the narrow entrance, past the blazing brick oven and into the candle lit dining area where there's sure to be a suave Italian waiter waiting to seat you.

Known for its traditional, yet laid back Italian cuisine, Gnocco sticks to authentic, hand made, warms-the-heart food. It's as though every time you take a bite of their creamy Gorgonzola and walnut pasta, there's a little voice inside you that says, "Yes, it's freezing outside and the economy is in a shambles, but it's all good because I'm eating something out of this world." The menu does a nice job of balancing simplicity and depth; from home made potato 'gnocchetti' to slow roasted pork in a creamy milk sauce, every dish has a simple base but boasts complex textures and tastes. Gnocco

Oh yeah, and to make my already severe Gnocco addiction worse, they have the a nutella and ricotta cheese calzone (need I say more?). Imagine my delight, being from Long Island where a calzone usually means three pepperoni slices lodged in a thick impregnable wedge of pizza crust. Gnocco's dessert calzone is like chomping into a fluffy, doughy bubble and finding a treasure trove of hazelnut and chocolate joy.

If you're in the mood for the kind of comfort food that warms the soul and doesn't freeze the wallet (all dinner entrees are under $25), Gnocco will certainly hit the spot.

Will you be dining on comfort food tonight?
