Inspired by Invader's creative approach to art through Rubik's Cubes, we're now looking to the classic toy as a great gift option.
We fell in love with Invader's Rubikcubism pieces earlier this year at his Jonathan Levine Gallery opening and haven't been able to shake the urge to play with a classic Rubik's Cube since.
Working with the classic 3x3 cubes, Invader (an artist who always appears masked in public), has used them to create everything from classic album covers, including Nirvana's Nevermind and The Clash's London Calling (seen below), to the green phantom from Pac-Man. His wor
k is really remarable–especially considering the fact that we can't even solve a Rubik's Cube without a tremendous amount of luck–and we're hoping to one day incorporate a piece into our office décor.
"[The Rubik's Cube] is an fascinating object, as it's both extremely simple and extremely complex," explains Invader. "I use the Rubik's Cube like an artist uses paint. I like the idea that it wasn't intended to be used this way, and that ultimately it works really well."
We're not sure if we'll ever be able to create anything as amazing as Invader has with these little guys, but we're certainly ready to try!
Inspired by Invader's work and view on the cube, we'll also be giving out several of these bad boys as fun little gifts this holiday season along with pictures we want the recipients to try copying. Should be rather entertaining after a few glasses of eggnog... and at just $11.99 a pop, why not?
What do you think of Invader's work? Are you a Rubik's Cube fan?
