With "The Giacometti Variations," American artist John Baldessari has created a stationary runway of monolithic sculptures.

John Baldessari at the Prada Foundation

On view now at the Prada Foundation in Milan is an installation of nine figures modeled after Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti’s work. Inspired by the fusion of art and fashion currently pervading the art and design world, John Baldessari sought to take Giacometti’s figures (which are “the most skinny and emaciated sculpture that exists,” he says) and make them even more extreme, stretching to about 15 feet tall and clothed in a rotation of 18 different “looks,” including a giant bustle, yellow floor-length braids, a trench coat, and a corset. Baldessari created all the clothing and adornments for the sculptures, in an act that serves to further blur the lines between art and fashion. The exhibit is on view now until December 26th, and if you find yourself in Milan we insist you go (and report back!).

What do you think of Baldessari's installation?
