While it may not have the profile or prestige of the celebrated fashion weeks in New York, Milan or Paris, Fashion Week Berlin has fast grown into a who's who of up-and-coming designers.
Since 2007, photographer Claudius Holzmann has been shooting Berlin Fashion Week (and has over 40,000 photos as a result). In Backstage Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin (teNeues, 2010) he selects the most illustrative and beautiful of the bunch to bring readers a glimpse of the action in Germany's most creative city.
In her forward to the book, designer Anja Gockel says that before participating in MBFWB, she was dubious about the future of fashion in Berlin ("too much dreariness, too little glamour, too gray," she says). After seeing the turnout and long list of celebrities in her front row, her faith in Berlin Fashion Week was founded. "The city's atmosphere, the enthusiasm of the countless fashion freaks, the press hype, the stars and starlets, and – last but not least – the buyers all make Berlin a real fashion event," Gockel says.
Holzmann's images are striking and (at times) playful, showing the antics of models backstage and in rehearsals. While there are faces you will likely recognize, such as Adina Forizs (pictured below, far left) who has already walked for Burberry Prorsum, Peter Pilotto and Paul Smith this year, the exciting part of the book is discovering the designers who may have previously flown under your radar.
There are backstage photos from Penkov, one of our favorite designers of the moment (stay tuned to StyledOn for more), as well Basso & Brooke, and Bernhard Willhelm, but many of the images will have you excitedly flipping to index, mumbling to yourself, "Who (or whose) is that?" Holzmann's beautiful book proves not only that he has serious shutter skills, but that Berlin Fashion Week is on the map, and here to stay.
