Art Basel Round Up

December 15, 2009

From StyledOn's own Leora Kadisha to private art consultants and designers including Laura Poretzky and Lita Asscher, our insiders spill on what they loved most about Art Basel this year.
Art Basel Round Up

"The art this year was absolutely beautiful. My favorites are always the works from David Zwirner (Ed. note: a collection of work from the gallery is shown above, including pieces from Dan Flavin, Yan Pei-Ming). Every single one of the artists he represents has a very clear distinct voice. Another highlight was Elefant's Deigo Garcia playing for galarie Gmurjinska and Sylvester Stallone, which was a beautiful performance of its own."

Chris Duncan Art Basel Mass II"I loved Chris Duncan's workMass II, 2009 (shown above, right) is peeled paint from the artist's palette that I thought was just very cool. The artist has an obsession with color theory and color relation, which is very much a fascination of mine being that I am a huge fan of Rothko's work. Human Abstraction 1, 2009 (above, left) was done on mirrored paper and he used the tongs of a fork to apply the paint. If you visit Baer Ridgway Exhibitions online you will find another one of Duncan's pieces (Everything All At Once, 2009), which looks like a flower and is (I believe) created of hand painted, hand cut pieces of cardboard."

Marilyn Minter Art Basel Salon 94 Lips tongue"I went to the Miami Beach Convention Center which is a great way to see a ton of art. I really liked the photographs by Marilyn Minter (seen above) and the paintings she is doing which I saw at Salon 94–and I also found the record spines that Keith Tyson does to be quite interesting; there is option to customize and commission a piece, so you pick your favorite albums and he will paint them. The height of the piece will echo the buyer's height as well–sounds confusing, but it's really cool!"

Lita Asscher Russel Simmons Power of Diamonds Art Basel"Art Basel is always a special time for me as I immensely enjoy all of the modern art that is in attendance as I am a big fan and collector. There were also some very unique furniture designers, that I was very interested in.

"Art Basel is a great mixture of wonderfully eclectic events and beautiful art. It brings together such a widely diverse and creative group of people, it's absolutely worth making the trip down to Miami. We had a great event Friday night at Michael Capponi's house that was in conjunction with the Diamond Empowerment Foundation and Royal Asscher. Russell Simmons and I led the auction- auctioning off a Stars of Africa ring. The night proved to be a great success as we were able to raise a lot of money for DEF"
