English Eclecticism, Now in SoHo
Feature Article in Home by Casey Kettleson / October 5, 2009
Using a clever combination of color and texture, modern and antique furniture, as well as original art, award-winning designer Kit Kemp brings her signature English eclecticism overseas. Always keeping in mind the basic requirements of a room (comfortable seating, good reading light, places to both work and play properly), Kemp has a gift for creating exceptional spaces within others through the careful consideration of art - including the Peter Clarke dog collage in the reception or mixed media pieces by Justine Smith and Jack Milroy - and the play of materials.
"When people travel, they don’t know where they are going, and the hotel becomes an adventure," Kemp told Hotels Magazine. "When you arrive through the front door, that in itself should be a sort of fantasy and exciting. A lot of hotels miss that - you walk through the door and it is like having a disciplinarian tell you what to do and where to do it."
Setting the scene at the Crosby Street Hotel is the bar and inviting drawing room set on opposite sides of the hotel’s lobby. The Crosby Bar (open all day everyday) features beautiful gray oak floors, a long pewter bar and tall windows and doors facing the leafy courtyard garden. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner as well for coffee, cocktails and an English afternoon tea, the bar can also be entered from the street at 246 Lafayette. The Drawing Room, a sumptuous residents' lounge with fireplaces, deep sofas and more original art, is sure to become a favorite during the upcoming winter months.
But the Crosby Street Hotel doesn't only look good - it smells good too. Sure to inspire weary travelers and lure people in from the street, is Le Jardin 10012 - a bespoke fragrance by Miller Harris. Designed to express the spirit and ethos of the hotel, acclaimed British perfumer Lyn Harris has chosen aromatic herbs, woods and spices to create a scent that is equally appealing to men and women alike. Le Jardin 10012 is an elegant fusion of bergamot, rosemary and thyme with cardamom, iris, rose and lavender. A base of cedar, vetiver, labdanum and moss add depth to this refreshing yet captivating fragrance that is available as a soap, body lotion, shower gel, shampoo and conditioner. A candle is also available for purchase in the lobby for you to take home.
And while the Crosby Street Hotel certainly appeals to all five senses, it is also one of the most environmentally responsible hotel builds in the United States; it will be certified by LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) by the US Green Building Council making it one of the very first hotels in the city to do so.

Ready to grab a drink at the Crosby Street Hotel bar or nestle into a couch in the drawing room? What are some of your favorite hotels in the city?
